Managing High-Volume Gas Loads in Commercial and Industrial Facilities
Large-scale facilities such as shopping malls, hospitals, and manufacturing complexes present unique challenges for gas pressure regulation. These sites often have highly variable gas loads, with large boilers and water heaters that can turn on and off suddenly. Managing these sudden changes in demand requires a gas regulator with a high flow capacity and a very fast response time. Fisher gas regulators are the industry's first choice for high-volume loads because of their ability to maintain a stable outlet pressure even when the flow rate jumps from zero to several thousand cubic feet per hour in a matter of seconds.
The key to handling large volumes is the internal flow geometry of the regulator. Fisher regulators are designed with large, unobstructed flow paths that minimize pressure drop and maximize the "Cg" or flow coefficient of the valve. This allows a smaller Fisher regulator to do the work of a much larger competitive model, saving space in the gas meter room and reducing the overall cost of the installation. Our high-capacity models are also engineered to reduce the "shock" associated with rapid valve movements, protecting downstream meters and piping from the damaging effects of pressure surges.
In commercial and industrial settings, "lock-up" performance is just as important as flow capacity. Lock-up is the ability of the regulator to shut off completely when there is no demand for gas. If a regulator has poor lock-up, the downstream pressure will continue to rise (creep) when the appliances are off, which can trigger safety relief valves or damage equipment. Fisher gas regulators are famous for their "bubble-tight" lock-up, achieved through the use of precision-ground valve seats and high-quality elastomeric seals. This ensures that the downstream pressure remains safe and stable, even during long periods of zero demand, such as over a weekend or during a facility shutdown.
For exceptionally large loads, we often recommend the use of "parallel regulation" or "worker-monitor" setups. In a parallel configuration, two or more Fisher regulators are installed side-by-side. This not only provides the necessary flow capacity but also offers a degree of redundancy; if one regulator needs maintenance, the other can handle the load, ensuring that the facility never loses its gas supply. Our pilot-operated regulators are particularly well-suited for these complex installations, as they can be easily synchronized to provide a smooth transition between different flow regimes. This level of system design is what allows our clients to manage their energy infrastructure with total confidence.
As a manufacturer, we understand that every commercial and industrial project is different. We provide a wide range of Fisher regulators with various body sizes and spring ranges to fit the specific footprint and pressure requirements of your facility. Our technical team is available to assist with sizing and selection, using advanced software to ensure that the regulator you choose is perfectly matched to your peak load and minimum flow conditions. By choosing our high-capacity regulation solutions, you are ensuring that your facility has the reliable gas supply it needs to stay productive, safe, and efficient, no matter how much the demand fluctuates.
